Old news is worse than no news
Dan Fielder writes on the Sticky Content blog that most corporate websites would be better served by not having a ‘news’ section prominent on the homepage.
The rationale behind this recommendation is:
- You are writing for yourself rather than for your users
- You have no hope at all of making any headway with the ‘news’ keyword
- You are producing smelly fish
For an explanation of that last point read Dan’s full post.
There is no doubt that the news section is incredibly overused, often as a catchall for dumping content that doesn’t have a place elsewhere. The fact is that it should have a place elsewhere and a good information architect will help you find it.
